Our team is comprised of dedicated individuals who are passionate about education and love helping students realize their dreams. Our tutors are experts in their subject areas, hailing from some of the leading universities in the country. Whether at your home or in our beautiful education center, located near downtown Charlottesville, Clayborne tutors meet one-to-one with students to address their specific needs.


Kevin Culbertson grew up in a military family and travelled much of his young life, but is now glad to call Charlottesville home. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 2012 with majors in Foreign Affairs and History. He also teaches and tutors ESL with the International Rescue Committee. He is an avid songwriter and guitarist. You may see him performing at a local singer/songwriter night in town. He is also an amateur luthier, and has begun designs for his first archtop guitar.

Peyton Stark grew up in Denver, where she acquired a deep love for the outdoors. She earned her BA and teaching license at the University of Colorado and her MFA from the University of Arizona. Before coming to Clayborne, she taught middle school English, college-level writing, and SAT/ACT classes in 3 different states. Whether it's a difficult GRE math problem or a complicated literary analysis, Peyton is passionate about helping students approach the most challenging content with confidence and creativity. In her free time, Peyton is an aspiring poet and banjo player. She is also obsessed with cooking, and trying all the amazing restaurants in Charlottesville.

James Supplee was born and raised in a small town called Parkesburg, Pennsylvania (roughly one hour’s drive west of Philadelphia), where he began tutoring and teaching in high school. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a degree in Economics while experiencing the joy of teaching and mentoring many students, ranging from middle schoolers in West Philadelphia to college-aged peers at Penn. He also trained to teach English as a Second Language in Hong Kong prior to his work with teenagers in Hanoi, Vietnam. In his free time, James enjoys sports (playing and watching), the outdoors, all kinds of music, and the wonderful food scene here in Charlottesville.

Elisabeth Wagner is a Charlottesville native who spent most of her childhood with her nose in a book. She pursued her love of reading by completing a bachelor's and master's in English from UVa and the University of Mississippi, respectively. After graduate school, Elisabeth worked full-time as a private tutor in DC. She recently moved back to Charlottesville to be closer to her family. In her free time, Elisabeth loves to cook, garden, eat at Charlottesville's wonderful restaurants, and take her dog, Sawyer, on walks through downtown Charlottesville.

Ari Stess is originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico. She holds a BA from Bard College and an MFA from Brooklyn College. She has taught college-level writing courses at NYU and City University of New York. At Clayborne, Ari specializes in SAT and ACT Verbal test prep and academic coaching. Ari is a playwright, director, and writer. In her spare time, she likes to explore the epic Charlottesville dining scene, go on hiking adventures, and write.

Jeremy Kemp hails from Sarasota, Florida, but now calls Charlottesville home after graduating from UVA with a degree in Environmental Thought & Practice. He is an avid believer that test taking is a skill that can be learned, and is passionate about helping students achieve their academic goals. When not working with clients, Jeremy is an outdoors nut and can be found backpacking, mountain biking, whitewater kayaking, or stargazing any time the weather is nice, or even when it’s not. He’s currently planning a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail.  Subjects: LSAT and GRE

Katya Sracic grew up in Northeast Ohio even staying to attend college at Kent State University where she graduated with a degree in Biology. Before now, the only time she had lived outside of Ohio since she was 10 months old was in 8th grade when her family lived in Tokyo and where she got her start tutoring. She has tutored math and science to every age, including small groups of elementary students at a summer camp and one on one tutoring with college students. Currently, Katya is serving an AmeriCorps term in addition to tutoring part-time until she starts medical school this coming August. Fun fact, while she always intended to go to medical school, her intended undergraduate major was Piano Studies until carpal tunnel derailed her plans at the age of 16.

Phil Horst grew up in Lancaster, Pa and studied English Writing and Theatre Arts at The University of Pittsburgh. After moving to Charlottesville in 2008, he enrolled at Mary Baldwin College to earn his teaching certificate. Phil currently teaches tenth and eleventh grade English at Albemarle High School and spends his spare time writing, directing and producing plays. Over the last several years, his work has been seen in Pittsburgh, New York and Charlottesville. Subjects: English, History & Math

Will Andrews is originally from Maine, but now lives in Charlottesville. He enjoys teaching math of all kinds because of how black and white it is. The motivation of the students is what Will enjoys most about working at Clayborne. He also enjoys the one-to-one style of Clayborne tutoring, because he believes students almost always learn better in a smaller setting. When he's not working, Will spends his time playing ultimate frisbee or practicing foreign languages.

 Barry Keith teaches at Monticello High School and holds a B.A. in French from the College of William and Mary as well as a M.Ed. from Virginia Tech. He has taught French I, II, III, IV, and AP French V, and Spanish I, II, and III. Barry has served with the College Board as a reader for the AP French exams yearly since 2005. He is married with three children and enjoys tournament Scrabble(R), solving chess problems, collecting stamps, poker, and reading.

Conner McCarthy was born and raised in Charlottesville, VA. He graduated in 2014 with a degree in Music and East Asian Studies from the University of Virginia. Since matriculating, Conner has been working as a translator and editor with the Global China Center and China Institute. Conner is an active composer in various musical genres and plans to apply within the next few years for a master's degree in music composition. His passions lie in intermedia musical composition, any form of swimmable water, watching movies (both good and bad) with friends, and discussing philosophy, theology and transcendence.

Tim Jenson originally hails from the great state of New Jersey but has lived in Charlottesville for more than 10 years now. He is a double graduate of the University of Virginia, graduating in 2008 with a B.S. in Computer Engineering and 2011 with an M.T. in Secondary Education (Mathematics). Tim loves getting to know the students he works with. When not working with students, you might find him out for a run or playing board games with his friends.

Josh Nierle was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. He graduated from William and Mary with a BA in Government and then earned his MA from Regent University in the same subject, concentrating in International Relations and Political Theory. One of his passions in this life lies in learning and teaching others to learn each in their own unique way.  He has recently moved to Charlottesville, and enjoys reading, debating, hiking, and soccer.
